Hope Hope is the thing with feathers That perches in the soul, And sings the tune--without the words, And never stops at all, And sweetest in the gale is heard; And sore must be the storm That could abash the little bird That kept so many warm. I've heard it in the chillest land, And on the strangest sea; Yet, never, in extremity, It asked a crumb of me. _Emily Dickinson

Iridescent Clouds

Cloud iridescence. 02/05/15 12:43 pm MST, from Moraine Park Museum, RMNP. Cloud iridescence is the occurrence of colors in a cloud similar to those seen in oil films on puddles, and is similar to irisation. It is a fairly uncommon phenomenon, most often observed in altocumulus, cirrocumulus, lenticular clouds and cirrus clouds. The colors are usually pastel, but can be very vivid. Iridescence is generally produced near the sun, with the sun's glare masking it. Iridescent clouds are a diffraction phenomenon caused by small water droplets or small ice crystals individually scattering light. Canon 5Dmk3, Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM, f/8, 1/2500s, ISO 100, lens focal length 32mm.

The Year of the Sheep

Happy Chinese New Year! The year of the Sheep! Bighorn ram in the Big Thompson Canyon, 11/12/07. Canon 5D, Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM, 1/1600s, f/5.6, ISO 400, lens focal length 400mm.

Antediluvian

Antediluvian.. "Heads up" to my friends and family downstream. There is risk of big rain combined with rapid snowmelt. The forecast has moderated in the past few hours, but there is potential for trouble. (Much better, of course, than wildfire risk.) The Big Thompson headwaters in Moraine Park, RMNP. 05/07/15 10:31AM MDT. Canon 5Dmk3, Canon EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM, f/16, [1/500, 1/250, 1/125], ISO 100, lens focal length 35mm.

Red Fox Vixen and Kit

A wonderful discovery today. Probably the best nature photography experience I've had this year. A den of foxes somewhere in Larimer County. They are a treasure and a joy. 05/12/15 6:31PM MDT. Canon 5Dmk3, Canon EF400mm f/5.6L USM, f/5.6, 1/1250s, ISO 1600, lens focal length 400mm.

Hunter Fox

Based on the size and health of the Red Fox kits, we really could assume the male fox was a good hunter… in addition to the vixen's good mothering. I saw him today in the territory of the den. But, he is a somewhat bigger fox than the vixen. And indeed, he was on the hunt for rodents. Those six kits must require a lot of hunting every day. 05/14/15 4:41 PM MDT, Canon 5Dmk3, Canon EF400mm f/5.6L USM, f/5.6, 1/1000s, ISO 640, lens focal length 400mm.

Owlets in the Witch's Broom

Great-horned owlets and the mother owl in the witch's broom in the Ponderosa Pine. The reason I captured this image today is … the momma won't be in the nest very long. The owlets are growing rapidly and elbow room is at a premium. Very soon the owlets will be testing their wings for the approaching fledging event in the first week of June. Canon 5Dmk3, Canon EF400mm f/5.6L USM, f/5.6, 1/250s, ISO 640, lens focal length 400mm. 05/15/15 1:26PM MDT.

Storm Vertical

Immense storm approached from the East on Saturday afternoon. It made the mountains look small and our mountains are big. The vertical orientation only begins to show the towering cumulus clouds. 05/15/15 1:37 PM MDT. Canon 5Dmk3, Canon EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM, f/11, ISO 100, [1/1600, 1/1000, 1/640], lens focal length 40mm.

Vixen Two Kits

The fox den activity on 05/17/15 6:00PM MDT. Two of the six kits. The vixen brought several meals in the hour or so I was watching. Growth rate is rapid. Canon 5Dmk3, Canon EF400mm f/5.6L USM, f/5.6, 1/640s, ISO 1000, lens focal length 400mm.

Vixen & Kit

The Red Fox vixen and one of the kits posed for me tonight. The kits are showing amazing growth. The adults bring meals several times per day. Canon 5Dmk3, Canon EF400mm f/4L USM, f/5.6, 1/800s, ISO 1000, lens focal length 400mm. 05/17/15 5:51 PM MDT.

Fishing in Paradise

The weather is pretty good. Sunshine was abundant this morning. I think that will be the case each morning …. through the weekend. The Big Thompson in Moraine Park is normal for late May. No flooding! 05/21/15 11:04AM MDT. Canon 5Dmk3, Canon EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM, f/16, 1/100s, ISO 100, lens focal length 40mm, 0.6 & 0.3 soft grad ND fitlers.

Food Chain

The adult foxes are great hunters and deliver dinner to the kits on a regular basis. Canon 5Dmk3, Canon EF400mm f/5.6L USM, f/5.6, 1/1000s, ISO 1000, lens focal length 400mm. Larimer County, Colorado. 05/17/15 5:51PM MDT.

Broad-tailed Nest

Very early for this discovery. Finding HB nests is usually a July activity for me. This 06/04/15 9:12AM find is about a month early. This is a broad-tailed hummingbird. The nest is the size of a walnut shell. The two eggs are pea-sized. Length of incubation is 16-19 days. The female HB makes a thick inner cup out of spiderweb and cottonwood fluff and she camouflages the outside with lichens, moss, and bark fragments. The structure, often anchored to the branch with spider webbing, is well-insulated and substantially decreases the nighttime energy requirements of the incubating female. Canon 5Dmk3, Canon EF400mm f/5.6L USM, f/5.6, 1/500s, ISO 1600, lens focal length 400mm. Larimer County, CO.

Newborn Elk

Another newborn elk in our side yard, tonight. Sure is a joy to observe. And, we are honored they view our place as a good birthing place. Canon 5Dmk3, Canon EF400mm f/5.6L USM, f/5.6, 1/800s, ISO 2000, lens focal length 400mm. 06/04/15 7:42PM MDT.

Long-tailed Weasel

Today was notable due to my close encounter with a Long-tailed Weasel. He was plundering the underground dens of Wyoming groundsquirrels. He is an amazing predator. 06/07/15 12:30PM MDT. Canon 5Dmk3, Canon EF400mm f/5.6L USM, f/5.6, 1/3200s, ISO 800, lens focal length 400mm. RMNP.

Hope for a better tomorrow

Sometimes, the light is magical and takes one's breath away. Moraine Park, RMNP, 06/10/15 5:39PM MDT. Crepuscular rays, maybe sunbeams, breaking through the heavy overcast. I gasped. Canon 5Dmk3, Canon EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM, f/16, ISO 100, lens focal length, [1/250s, 1/125s, 1/60s].

Broad-tailed Hummingbird

Broad-tailed Hummingbird, male. During rapid flight, male Broad-tailed Hummingbirds produce a particularly shrill, buzzing whistle as air rushes through slots created by the tapered tips of the ninth and tenth primary wing feathers. This photo illustrates the slot. Canon 5Dmk3, Canon EF400mm f/5.6L USM, f/5.6, 1/5000s, ISO 1250, lens focal length 400mm. Moraine Park, RMNP. 06/17/15 12:42 PM MDT.

Broad-tailed Hummingbird Alert

Broad-tailed Hummingbird, male. This is an illustration of how we know we are looking at a Broad-tailed Hummingbird. When another male enters the territory of a male, he flares out tail and wings to appear "big". I was able to photograph front and back today. Canon 5Dmk3, Canon EF400mm f/5.6L USM, f/5.6, 1/2000s, ISO 1600, lens focal length 400mm. Moraine Park, RMNP. 06/17/15 2:11 PM MDT.

Hour 1

Now the muleys are dropping fawns. This is the more brave of the twins born this morning. The doe quickly moved the newborns to a safer place as soon as they could walk, which was within an hour of their birth. 06/19/15 9.30AM. Canon 5Dmk3, Canon EF400mm f/5.6L USM, f/5.6, 1/640s, ISO 1250, lens focal length 400mm. Larimer County, CO.

There's a reason they call it the Golden Hour. Not only is the light soft and colorful, the animals are active in the cool early morning air. This 60 day old fawn is enjoying the yellow flowers in the meadow. 08/05/15 7:19 AM MDT. Canon 5Dmk3, Canon EF400mm f/5.6L USM, f/5.6, 1/640s, ISO 2500, lens focal length 400mm. RMNP.

A Berry for Breakfast

This is a male Mountain Bluebird fledgling. His first summer is going fairly well. In his beak is a ripe berry from the wax currant bush. He had no fear of my camera. Upper Beaver Meadows, RMNP. Canon 5Dmk3, Canon EF400mm f/5.6L USM, f/5.6, 1/3200s, ISO 400, lens focal length 400. 08/19/15 10:21AM MDT.

When Indian Paintbrush blooms

It was absolutely beautiful this morning. Great birding opportunities and amazing colors all around. This is a female Broad-tailed Hummingbird gathering nectar from an Indian Paintbush in full bloom. 08/19/15 10:03 AM MDT. Canon 5Dmk3, Canon EF400mm f/5.6L USM, f/5.6, 1/1600s, ISO 400, lens focal length 400mm. Upper Beaver Meadows, RMNP.

Black Bear in Ponderosa Pine

A tighter crop for Mr. Bear. This 350# black bear male and I are now on a first name basis. I think he has had his paws in the cookie jar. 09/09/15 12:21PM MDT. Somewhere in Larimer County, CO. Canon 5Dmk3, Canon EF400mm f/5.6L USM, f/5.6, [1/640s, 1/1000s, 1/1600s], ISO 1250, lens focal length 400mm. This is an HDR image, which was made possible by ghost reduction in HDR Efex Pro2.

Aspen Splendor September

Now is the peak aspen color in the Bear Lake area, RMNP. 9500' is very good now. This scene is about 150 yards up the Flattop Mountain trail from Bear Lake. 09/19/15 7:36AM MDT. Canon 5Dmk3, Canon EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM, f/16, 1/13s, ISO 100, lens focal length 35mm. 0.9 soft grad ND filter. Aspen colors will spread to lower elevations between now and Oct. 10.

Alpenglow Equinox

True alpenglow. 09/21/15 7:06PM MDT. That is 5 minutes after the sun set at 7:01. The sun (below the western horizon) lit up the sky and clouds with color and light. That light bounced down to the mountains, forest and lake. It was magical. The other benefit of darkness is the paucity of people in the area. They went home. I was the last to leave the parking lot at 7:30pm. Our cameras can "see" (via long exposures) long after our eyes can no longer detect the colors and light. Canon 5Dmk3, Canon EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM, f/16, ISO 400, lens focal length 28mm, [1.3s, 2.0s, 3.2s].

Aspen Eyes

Aspen "eyes" have plenty to see. 10/02/15 12:19PM MDT. Canon 5Dmk3, Canon EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM, f/16, ISO 100, lens focal length 58mm, [1/160s, 1/100s, 1/60s]. Location = where Bierstadt Moraine meets Glacier Creek, RMNP. No trail to here, but that is why it is a wilderness.

Momma defends her cub

Momma Bear claws. She knows she is higher on the food chain than me. This is a telephoto lens shot from 50 yards distance. It only looks too close for safety. Canon 5Dmk3, Canon EF400mm f/5.6L USM, f/5.6, 1/200s, ISO 1600, lens focal length 400mm. Tripod mount. 10/08/15 5:09PM MDT. Somewhere in Larimer County.

Momma defends her cub

The bears are back (somewhere in Larimer County). This is my first sighting of this momma and cub this year. They are a cinammon shade, but are black bears. They look very healthy and happy. This is a first year cub, who obeyed momma bear and stayed high in the tree. In about a month, or so, they will go into hibernation together for the cub's second winter. The cub will be weaned in the summer of 2016, in his second year. Canon 5Dmk3, Canon EF400mm f/5.6L, f/6.3, 1/125s, ISO 1600, lens focal length 400mm., tripod mount. 10/08/15 5:29 PM MDT.

Sunset Light Above the Peaks

Sunset light on the peaks, from my deck tonight. It was one of the best sunsets of the year. Right clouds. Right light. View of Long's and surrounding geographical landmarks. New snow. Estes Park, CO. RMNP. 10/07/15 6:31 PM MDT. Canon 5Dmk3, Canon EF200mm f/2.8L USM, f/8, 1/200s, ISO 800, lens focal length 200mm. Handheld.

Buck Portrait

Every year, on this day in November, the big bucks come into the area from the National Forest to check out the does in heat. And, after they leave the Estes Park neighborhoods, they can be seen in Upper Beaver Meadows while the hunting season is in progress. I am always impressed with the girth of their necks. 11/16/2015 12:21PM. Canon 5Dmk3, Canon EF400mm f/5.6L USM, lens focal length 400mm., ISO 640, 1/2000s.

Ram & Flock

A fine Bighorn ram on Castle Mountain, overlooking his flock. This is a full curl ram of about 12 years age. He was supervising 20 or so females and yearlings. This guy was in total control. Bighorn Ram

This photo illustrates the annular rings and the results of "brooming of horns" utilized to improve the peripheral vision of the ram. He is 12 years old, as determined (approximately) by the number of annular rings. And, you can see the horn tips have been worn down to help his vision to the sides. Canon EOS 5DmkIII, Canon EF400mm f/5.6L USM, 1/1000s @ f/5.6, ISO 200, lens focal length 400mm., 01/06/16 1:04PM. Fall River Road, Estes Park, CO.

The clouds were standing lenticular, but were falling apart by the time this image was captured. Easily the most colorful sunset I have ever seen.

Standing Lenticular over the Continental Divide

Before the colors of sunset engulfed the valley, a very ominous standing lenticular cloud formed about 20 minutes before sunset. It fell apart by sunset, but looked just like an Iowa tornado over Long's Peak for a bit of time. While the color images are appealing, the b&w image is a better cloud photo. RMNP Upper Beaver Meadows sunset. 01/11/16 4:27PM. Canon EOS 5DmkIII, Canon EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM, [1/125s, 1/80s, 1/50s], ISO 100, f/16, lens focal length 47mm. Official sunset at 4:50PM.

Sublimation of Snow at Sunrise

Sublimation of snow at sunrise. 01/26/16 7:21am. Official Estes Park sunrise was 7:16am. It was about +18 degrees at the storm pass trailhead, with 15 mph winds. The atmospheric phenomenon is not all blowing snow. The clouds represent snow evaporating from a solid without melting into a liquid.... the definition of sublimation. Canon EOS 5DmkIII, Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS, 1/15s@f/1

Western Bluebird, male

Many Western Bluebirds arrived today in RMNP. This male and his mate were observed near the Beaver Meadows entrance. They were feasting on earthworms in the mild, moist weather. 04/11/16 8:55 AM. Canon EOS 5DmkIII, Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM, 1/1600s@f/5.6. ISO 800, lens focal length 400mm.

Red-Naped Sapsucker, male

Amazing presence of Red-naped Sapsuckers in the West Alluvial Fan area. The courtship behavior is wild and noisy. This is a male. Wapiti Congregation

The elk were doing well in this snowstorm. The snow was about 18" deep. They have long legs... and warm coats... and the ability to nose through the snow to reach the green grass of the meadow. This herd was at rest behind the Moraine Park Museum. These are mostly females and a few subadult males (spikes). The mature bulls hang out in a bachelor's group in Horseshoe Park. 04/17/16 1:04PM. Lake Estes is a birding hotspot now. This afternoon there were 26 White Pelicans on the lake. The collective noun is a pod of pelicans. Wing span is an amazing 108". This was a migrating flock, probably headed to the Canadian provinces after spending the winter on the Gulf Coast. 04/18/16 4:30PM. Aerial Attack

Aerial combat. This encounter was in Moraine Park, RMNP, 04/23/16 10:16am. A large Red-tailed Hawk was perched in the treetops. A female American Kestrel decided the raptor was encroaching on her territory. The small kestrel defended her territory very effectively. I later discovered the nesting spot of the kestrel pair. Killdeer and snow flakes

Snow flakes in the air. This is a Killdeer. I can't tell the difference between males and females. The name, Killdeer, comes from a written approximation of the bird's call, as heard by early naturalists. 04/28/16 4:23PM. The Annual Snipe Hunt

It's a good year to observe Wilson's Snipe. I'm seeing many snipe... more often. Displaying males fly high in the sky and make a curious whistling noise (“winnowing”), created by air passing over his modified outer tail feathers. This is from Upper Beaver Meadows, RMNP. The snipe assumed I could not see him, but he forgot that he stands out in contrast to the snow. 04/30/16 4:09PM. Osprey Pair in Flight

One year after the 2015 osprey tragedy, we have a pair of beautiful osprey interested in the Osprey Tower near Lake Estes. This is a great development. Nature finds a way. There are a lot of fish in the lake. These birds are protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. The hens were foraging for food in the woods and pretending to not care at all.

Young Bull Moose

As recently as 2009, the national park told visitors there were no bull moose on the east side of the continental divide. Since then, we have had a steady increase of moose in the park, as the population of elk has been constrained by elk exclosure fences. Somewhere in Larimer County. 05/06/16 9:52am. Canon 5Dmk3, Canon EF400mm f/5.6L USM, f/5.6, 1/2000s, ISO 400, lens focal length 400mm.

The Yearling

This young bull moose offers huge potential for the moose population on the east side of RMNP. Life span of moose in the wild is 15-20 years. If he survives, he will have a big impact on his offspring. This is a Shiras moose (Alces alces shirasi). This is a different subspecies than moose in Alaska or eastern Canada/northeast US. The Shiras moose is the smallest subspecies in north america. Colorado's moose population is approaching 3000. 05/06/16 9:52 am.
